Ischia Porto – Day 2 – Part 1 – A Walk in the Park

Our second day in Ischia Porto began with a walk around the port area.  The “Bocca Vecchia” is an old bridge, dating from 1670, which connected the port area with what, at the time, was part of a naval yard, and today, it hosts a nice park.  The old bridge is used for autos and pedestrians, while a smaller, pedestrian-only bridge sits a short distance away.

The Parco Prof. Paul Buchner is named after the German scientist who moved to Ischia in 1944.  Passionate about the island, he focused much of his remaining years on writing and researching the history and marine life of the island, even founding a study center here.  He died in Ischia, in 1978.  The park, named in his honor, is a lovely place for a stroll.  There was only one other person there at the time of our visit, and so, it is a place where it is possible to get away from the crowds, and relax with nature.

Next up: We continue our second day in Ischia Porto, with a visit to the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Portosalvo!
