Rome – Day 8 – Part 2 & Day 9 – Part 1 – Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale

That night, we had takeout Chinese food, and relaxed in the apartment.  The next morning, we were out bright and early, heading to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, which was literally around the corner from where we were staying.

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale is at Via Francesco Crispi, #24.   Since first opening its doors in 1925, the gallery has had numerous homes, as well as a few different names.  It only opened in its present location in 1995.  Inside, you will find approximately 150 works of art on display, including pieces by artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio, and Giorgio Morandi.

During our visit, there was a special exhibit honoring what would have been the 100th birthday of Pier Paolo Pasolini, and displaying paintings that the famous film director had done, in addition to works by other artists in its permanent collection.

One of the works that I was particularly drawn to was a self-portrait by Renato Guttuso.  Guttuso is considered to be one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century.  He also had a political career, serving as senator for the Italian Communist Party, from 1976 to 1983.  He died in Rome in 1987.

Next up: We continue our visit of the museum, and then, head back to Trastevere!
