Naples – Day 1 – Part 3 – Monuments, Dinner, and Fireworks

This section of the waterfront is lined with high-end hotels, such as the Grand Hotel Santa Lucia and the Excelsior.

The Fontana del Gigante can be found along Via Partenope, directly on the waterfront.  The fountain is the work of Pietro Bernini and Michelangelo Naccherino.  It dates from the early 1600s, but it was only put in its present location in 1906.  The three arches of the fountain are topped by coats of arms of the city of Naples, and the viceroys of Naples.  The two statues, in the side arches, represent river divinities.

The Monumento a Re Umberto I can be found at Via Nazario Sauro, #24.  During his reign, the king of Italy, Umberto I, was responsible for many improvements to the city of Naples.

The monument was vandalized, when protesters threw red paint onto the marble base.

After a brief rest back at the apartment, we returned to the waterfront to have dinner at Transatlantico, where we dined on delicious fresh fish!

Next up: We explore more of the area, including the Piazza del Plebiscito!
