Agrigento – Day 4 – Part 3 – The Diocesan Museum

At Via Duomo, #94, you will find the Biblioteca Lucchesiana.  The library was founded in 1765, by the then bishop of Agrigento, Andrea Lucchesi Palli.  It contains more than 60,000 books, illuminated manuscripts, and pieces of art.  Unfortunately for us, it was closed at the time of our visit, but has since reopened to the public.

The Museo Diocesano di Agrigento, or the Diocesan Museum of Agrigento, can be found on the north side of Piazza Don Minzoni, at the very top of the town, next to the Biblioteca Lucchesiana.  This is one of the oldest sections of the city, and for centuries, the area housing the town’s most important buildings.  Anyone visiting the city of Agrigento should make an effort to come up here, and visit this lovely museum.  Spread over two floors, the museum displays artwork taken from the local parishes, as well as pieces from the cathedral’s treasury.

Included with the visit to the museum, you will see the apartment where Pope John Paul II stayed, during his trip to Agrigento in 2000.

Next up: We head next door, to visit the Cathedral or Duomo of Agrigento!
